About
Professor Alfio Ferlito, MD, is a distinguished Italian otolaryngologist known for his significant contributions to head and neck surgery and oncology. He graduated in medicine from the University of Bologna in 1968 and completed his residency in otolaryngology and pathology. He served at the ENT Department of Padua University from 1970 to 1997 before being appointed Professor and Chairman of the ENT Clinic at the University of Udine School of Medicine, a position he held from 1997 to 2013. Additionally, he directed the Department of Surgical Sciences at Udine from 2003 to 2009.
Professor Ferlito has collaborated with over 600 international experts in publishing articles, editorials, commentaries, book chapters, and books. Notable among his works are “Cancer of the Larynx” (1985), “Neoplasms of the Larynx” (1993), and “Surgical Pathology of Laryngeal Neoplasms” (1996). He has co-authored significant books on laryngeal diseases and oncology, including “Granulomas and Neoplasms of the Larynx” and “Surgery for Cancer of the Larynx and Related Structures.”
A prolific researcher, Professor Ferlito has authored or co-authored 593 peer-reviewed publications and 54 book chapters. He serves as editor, co-editor, or reviewer for over 273 prestigious medical journals, including The Lancet Oncology, Cancer, and Head and Neck.
His contributions have been recognized with honorary fellowships from several Royal Colleges of Surgeons and professional societies. He has received multiple distinctions, including two Presidential Citations from the American Laryngological Association. Professor Ferlito has been a visiting professor at numerous leading universities worldwide and has played an integral role in international organizations like the WHO’s Committee on Tumor Classification.
His career has been dedicated to advancing research, education, and international collaboration in head and neck oncology, making him a leading figure in the field.
