Cerebral blood flow (CBF) is the amount of blood given to the brain over time. In a healthy adult, about 750 ml blood reaches the brain every minute, which is about 15% of the total heart production. Each 100 grams of brain tissue receives about 50 to 54 ml of blood per minute. CBF increases when carbon dioxide or hydrogen levels in the blood increases, or when the blood becomes less thick (less sticky). The brain requires a continuous supply of oxygen and glucose to function properly. Astrocytes, a type of brain cell converts glucose into lactate, which neurons use as energy during brain activity.
Metabolism is the process by which the body and brain converts food and oxygen into energy. In the brain, this energy is mainly used to send and receive signals by neurons. The brain requires a stable supply of glucose and oxygen from the blood to function properly. Some of the glucose are used by astrocytes (support of brain cells) and are converted into lactate, which is later passed in neurons. When neurons become active, they use more lactate and oxygen to produce the energy required for brain function.
