About
.Roy G. Beran is a distinguished consultant neurologist, accredited sleep physician, and expert in legal medicine, holding an extensive list of medical and legal qualifications. His contributions span clinical practice, academia, research, and medical law on a global scale.
He holds multiple fellowships, including with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh), and the American Academy of Neurology. His expertise is recognized in neurology, public health, and sleep medicine, with registration under the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
In addition to his clinical work, he has served as a Designated Medical Examiner for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, a medical assessor for the NSW State Insurance Regulatory Authority, and an assessor for the NSW Workers Compensation Commission. He has also been a List 1 Consultant in Neurology for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), where he held the rank of Commander in the RAN Reserves.
Academically, he is a Conjoint Professor of Medicine at the University of New South Wales, a Professor at the School of Medicine, Griffith University, and a Conjoint Professor at Western Sydney University. He previously held the position of Professor and Chair of Medical Law at Sechenov Moscow 1st State University, but he severed ties with the university following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
His contributions to medical law are extensive, serving as the Australian Governor and Immediate Past President of the World Association for Medical Law (WAML), where he has held multiple leadership positions, including President and Secretary General. He has played a key role in organizing numerous World Congresses for Medical Law and has been instrumental in advancing legal medicine education, co-negotiating the establishment of a program in Legal Medicine at Bond University in collaboration with the Australasian College of Legal Medicine (ACLM).
In neurology and sleep medicine, he has pioneered clinical trials and research in private practice, authoring publications in collaboration with leading academic and tertiary institutions. His research interests include mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), concussion, epilepsy, stroke, neuroepidemiology, neurological imaging, and medical education. He has published over 400 papers, book chapters, and letters to the editor, presented more than 450 papers at national and international meetings, and authored or edited 17 books.
His influence extends to editorial roles, having been the Editor-in-Chief of Medicine and Law, the international journal of the WAML, and serving on numerous editorial boards. In 2022, he became a founding member of the Australian Magnetic Resonance Imaging Association and was elected Vice President of its foundation Board of Management.
In recognition of his service and contributions, he was awarded membership in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 2015. A former Commander in the Royal Australian Navy Reserves, he was awarded the Order of Australia in 2015
