About
Dr. Seung-Yong Seong, M.D., Ph.D., is a Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the College of Medicine, Seoul National University, South Korea. He previously served as Director of the Wide River Institute of Immunology at Seoul National University. Additionally, he is the founder and CEO of Shaperon Inc., a biotech company listed on KOSDAQ, which focuses on developing anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer therapeutics. Dr. Seong is renowned for his pioneering work on the Damage-Associated Molecular Pattern (DAMP) theory, which was first published in Nature Reviews Immunology in 2004. Since then, he has published 58 papers on DAMP and immunotherapy. After earning his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from Seoul National University in 1995, Dr. Seong conducted research at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 2001 to 2004. In 2008, he served as the Director of the Department of Disease Research at the Korea Health Industry Development Institute for two years. Since 2019, Dr. Seong has held the position of Vice President of the International DAMP Association. He is also an active member of the American Association of Immunologists and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
