Molecular Neuroscience
It is the study of how small molecules in the brain and nervous system work together to control ideas, feelings and behavior. This focuses on how signals are sent between brain cells, how genes and environment shape the brain, and how brain cells change and adapt. This region also helps in understanding diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s at the molecular level.
The respective fields include: Behavior epigenetics, behavioural genetics, cellular neurosciences, computational neurosciences, connectomics, imaging genetics and integrative neuroscience.
Neurodegeneration: Neurodegeneration is the slow movement and death of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It leads to severe brain disorders that deteriorate over time and have no cure. These diseases affect memory, movement and thinking abilities.
Common neurodegeneractive diseases include: Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington disease, amyotropic lateral sclerosis (ALS), lewy body disease, Friedreich’s ataxia, and spinal muscular atrophy.
