Stroke

A stroke is a serious medical condition that occurs when blood flow suddenly stops or decreases in one part of the brain. This means that the brain does not get enough oxygen and nutrients, causing the brain cells to die within minutes.

There are mainly two types of strokes – ischemic stroke, caused by a blocked blood vessel, and haemorrhagic stroke is caused by bleeding blood vessel. A temporary type that is called a mini-stroke or TIA (transient ischemic attack) is also present, where the symptoms last only for a short time. Symptoms of stroke usually come suddenly. They include weakness or numbness in the face, hand, or leg (especially the body), trouble in speaking, speech, vision problems, dizziness, and loss of balance.

Stroke is a medical emergency, and rapid treatment is very important to reduce brain damage and improve recovery. Risk factors of stroke include high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, lack of physical activity and an unhealthy diet. Treatment may include medicines, surgery and rehabilitation. Recovery depends on how quickly the person gets help and how much the brain was affected. Many people can improve with medical therapy and support.
