Acute Spinal Cord Injury

An acute spinal cord injury is a sudden and severe injury to the spinal cord, usually caused by accidents such as car crashes, fall, sports injuries or violence. The spinal cord is a bundle of the vein that moves down from the middle of your back and takes a message between your brain and the body. When it is injured, the brain cannot send indications properly, which can affect movement, emotion and body functions.

This type of injury can cause partial or complete loss of movement (paralysis) and feel below the injury level o. For example, if the injury is more in the neck, a person may not be able to move his arms or legs. If this is low, they may still be able to use their arms but may lose leg movement.

Symptoms may include severe back pain, weakness, numbness, difficulty in breathing, or loss of bladder and bowel control. It is a medical emergency, and quick treatment is very important. Doctors use imaging tests such as MRI or CT scans to check damage. Treatment may include surgery, drugs and physical therapy to reduce inflammation. Recovery depends on how bad the injury is and how quickly treatment is given. Some people may improve over time, while others may require long -term care.
