Cognitive neuroscience is the interface of neuroscience and psychology aimed at investigating how the brain facilitates processes such as memory, attention, perception, language, emotion, and decision-making. Cognitive neuroscience uses techniques such as fMRI and EEG in order to reveal the neural bases of cognition and behavior, providing insight into the way in which mental processes emerge out of brain function. Scientists apply cognitive neuroscience to understand diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease—where impairments in cognitive processes for memory and executive functions relate to changes within certain brain areas—and autism spectrum disorder, so that they can better understand how disruptions of brain-behavior relationships are the basis for difficulties with communication and social interaction. Research also examines how the brain responds to body versus emotional pain, showing separate brain circuits for separate classes of sensations. More broadly, cognitive neuroscience further illuminates how the brain functions to support cognition, behavior, and emotion and holds the promise of facilitating more effective targeted neurological interventions and treatments.
