Computational neuroscience

Computational neurosciences apply mathematics and computer science to detect how the brain works. Using data and simulation, researchers model brain structures – such as cerebellum and brainstem – and examine processes such as learning, memory formation and development. These computer-based models also help to explain how different areas of the brain communicate-especially prefrontal cortex such as areas, which are important for decision making and planning. Beyond understanding normal brain function, computational methods are being used to simulate neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, with the goal of developing targeted treatments and improving treatment strategies.
