Congenital Myopathies
Congenital Myopathies is a rare group of neuromuscular genetic disorders present at birth, often with unknown causes. The common condition includes weakness of muscles, stiffness, hypotonia, contractures of the joints, and developmental delay. They can present with complications like scoliosis, compromise of the respiratory system, swallowing difficulty, and cardiac issues. They are hard to diagnose, with a multitude of neurological, musculoskeletal, and physical examination, electrodiagnostic tests, medical imaging, and muscle biopsy utilized to evaluate them. Since no cure exists, treatment focuses on managing symptoms with physical and occupational therapy, assistive technology, medication, and surgery to enhance the quality of life. Research advancement—most notably with whole-exome sequencing—is facilitating faster, more precise diagnoses and improved long-term prognosis for affected individuals.
