Electroretinography
Electroretinography (ERG) is a harmless eye test that examines the working of the retina. The retina is the sensitive nerve layer at the back of your eye that enables you to see. When you put light into your eye, the retina converts it into electrical impulses that send to the brain. ERG can pick up these small impulses in order to verify whether the retina can operate normally.
You are seated in a dark room for the test. Drops of medicine are inserted in your eyes to enlarge your pupils. Next, an eye contact lens or small sensor is placed on your eye, and you stare at flashing lights. The sensor picks up the reaction of the retina and sends the data to a computer.
Medical practitioners use ERG to identify retinal diseases like retinitis pigmentosa, cone-rod dystrophy, or diabetic retinopathy. It might also follow changes in the retina over time or observe side effects from certain medication.
ERG is harmless, short, and very helpful in understanding eye problems that cause poor vision.
