Epilepsy and Seizures
Epilepsy is a condition that affects the brain and causes repeated seizures to a person. A seizure is like a small “storm” in the brain where nerve cells send mixed-up signs. This can make a person suddenly stop talking, fall down, shake, or stare blankly. Not all seizures look the same – some are big and easy to watch, while others are small and can only cause confusion or strange behavior for a few seconds.
Epilepsy can begin at any age and can be caused by brain injuries, infections or problems present at birth. In many cases, the reason is not known. Having just a seizure does not mean that someone has epilepsy. Doctors look for a pattern of seizures over time.
Epilepsy is usually treated with daily drugs that help prevent seizures. For some people, surgery or a special diet may also help. With correct care, most people with epilepsy can go to school, work, and live a normal life like someone else.
