Fungal infections
Fungal diseases are infections that result from small fungi that are in the air, soil, water, and even on human skin. They commonly infect the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes but, in unusual cases, can reach deeper organs. Ringworm, athlete’s foot, candidiasis, jock itch, and tinea versicolor are common skin conditions usually accompanied by itching, redness, rash, or blisters. These infections are easily transmitted by direct contact with infected water or ground, and by contaminated personal items such as towels and clothing. Poor personal hygiene and damp conditions also facilitate transmission. Topical ointments and creams may be used for superficial infections, and chronic infections are treated with oral antifungal tablets. Intravenous antifungal medications are given when infection is widespread. Prevention involves practices of good personal hygiene, frequent bathing, drying of the skin, frequent changing of apparel, and not touching the affected individual or object. Recurrence can be prevented with early diagnosis and proper treatment.
