Huntington’s Disease
Huntington’s disease (HD) is a genetic brain disorder that causes gradual breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. It usually begins with mood change and unusual movements, then slowly affects thinking, behavior and physical abilities. HD is caused by a defective gene called Huntingin, which creates a harmful protein that damages the brain cells. People with HD may experience depression, anger, memory problems and trouble walking or speaking. There is no cure, but drugs can help manage symptoms, and treatments such as physical, speech and behavior therapy can improve the quality of life. With early diagnosis and proper care, people with HD can live better and long life.
