Motivated behavior

Motivated behavior is the physiological drives—like hunger, thirst, and sexual desire—that energize and guide actions essential for survival and reproduction. These basic impulses are central to behavioral neuroscience, a discipline that investigates how biological systems support behaviors. Within the larger “Brain Injury and Behavioral Neuroscience” session, motivated behavior is discussed in relation to other topics such as sensation, perception, control of movement, learning and memory, sleep and biological rhythms, and emotion. Knowledge about how the brain coordinates these drives for motivation is crucial to understanding healthy behavior and pathologies that arise when these operations get out of tune. Observations here can guide research on disorders such as eating disorders, addiction, mood disorders, and other disorders where fundamental drives are dysregulated. This fits well into the session’s consideration of how brain damage may interrupt or modify motivated behaviors, illuminating mechanisms of disease and potential for rehabilitation.
