Multiple System Atrophy (MSA)
Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) is a rare and severe neurological disorder that impacts the automatic (unconscious) functions and movement of the body. It deteriorates nerve cells in various areas of the brain, particularly those governing balance, blood pressure, bladder control, and muscle movement. Individuals with MSA can develop symptoms that are also characteristic of Parkinson’s disease, including stiffness, slowness, and tremors. They can also feel dizzy when standing up, have problems speaking or swallowing, have poor coordination, or have bladder problems. MSA tends to worsen over time and can cause significant disability. The etiology is unknown, and it cannot be treated, but the symptoms can be managed using such as medication, physical therapy, and modification of one’s lifestyle. It often happens in people who are aged 50 or 60. Early diagnosis and supportive care will increase comfort and quality of life. MSA has two general types: MSA-P (Parkinsonian type) and MSA-C (Cerebellar type) based on which symptoms are more dominant.
