Neurodegenerative disease

Home/ Scientific Sessions / Neurodegenerative disease

Neurodegenerative diseases are diseases where nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord gradually deteriorate over time, causing cognitive, emotional and progressive damage to motor function. These conditions include common disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington Disease, ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig disease), and multiple sclerosis. They originate from a mixture of genetic, lifestyle and environmental effects and differ from some types of dementia in that the neurons themselves lose their structure and the ability to function properly. As these diseases advance, symptoms like memory lapses, personality shifts, problems or speaking and mood or behavior change become more pronounced. While there is currently no cure, initial diagnosis is necessary to slow down progress. Treatment may include drugs, physical therapy, lifestyle changes, and strong accessory care – including speech, professional therapy and emotional support – for both patients and their families.
