Neurodevelopmental Disabilities
Neurodevelopmental disabilities are lifelong conditions that affect how the brain develops. They can cause problems in thinking, movement, or talking, and may also lead to physical or behavior-related challenges. This disability can be caused by genetics, environmental factors, early infections, swelling, trauma or exposure to toxins.
Common examples include autism spectrum disorder, ADHD (attention deficit activity disorder), cerebral palsy, down syndrome, torture syndrome and intellectual disability. Early intervention is important to help individuals reach their full potential. Treatment often involves a team of experts and may include vocational therapy, physical therapy, speech and language therapy, psychotherapy and applied behavior analysis.
