Parkinsons Disease And PD-Related Disorders
Parkinson’s disease and PD-related disorders: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a long -term brain disorder that mainly affects movement. It causes tremors, muscle stiffness, slow speed and poor balance. People with PD may have trouble walking, talking and clearly thinking. The disease occurs when brain cells that form dopamine – a chemical that helps to control movement – begins to die. Without enough dopamine, it becomes difficult to move. Other disorders associated with low dopamine include restless leg syndrome, vascular Parkinsonism, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Dementia with Lewy Bodies and many systems atrophies. The PD is usually treated with drugs such as Levodopa, which helps to improve the movement. Therapy such as physiotherapy, speech therapy and proper nutrition also help. In some cases, deep brain stimulation (DBS) such as brain surgery is used to reduce symptoms. Although there is no cure, initial diagnosis and proper treatment can make life easier and help reduce disability.
