Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
Home/ Scientific Sessions / Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
Positron emission tomography (PET) is a medical scan that travels through your blood, tracking a small amount of a safe radioactive material called a tracer, and forms a wide 3D image of your body. After being injected, this tracer flows into various tissues and emits indications that PET scanner detects to generate scanner images. PET scans are particularly effective in spotting cancer – often before the tumor grows or spreads. They also used to assess heart and blood vessel problems, and diagnosed neurological conditions or types of brain tumors. Because the PET shows how limbs and tissues are working – not only how they look – it is a powerful tool for the guidance of accurate diagnosis and treatment plans.
