Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP)

Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) is an uncommon neurologic disease that affects movement, balance, speech, and eye movement. PSP is caused by damage to brain cells, specifically areas that control walking, coordination, and eye movement. People with PSP often have trouble balancing and tend to fall backwards. Stiffness, slurred speech, trouble swallowing, and trouble moving the eyes—specifically, up or down—are also seen in people with PSP. PSP symptoms may be mistaken for Parkinson’s disease, but it is more rapid in development and unresponsive to Parkinson’s drugs. PSP etiology is unknown, although PSP involves the accumulation of a protein called tau in the brain. No treatment exists, but its symptoms are managed with physical therapy, speech therapy, and care. PSP usually begins after the age of 60 and gradually deteriorates over time. Prompt treatment and management will make patients more comfortable and safer.
