Response Inhibition

Response inhibition is the way your brain can stop you from doing something automatically or out of habit, especially when it’s not the right time or it could make a mistake. It is critical to self-control and forces you to think before doing something.

For example, if you’re in a game and someone tricks you into making a pretend throw of the ball, but you don’t react at all until they throw it — that’s response inhibition. It stops you from responding too quickly or acting on impulse.

This skill is applied in everyday life, for example, not interrupting another person, not touching something hot, or not checking your phone in class or in the workplace.

Response inhibition is controlled by the frontal part of the brain, and it is developed over time and with repetition. People with ADHD or those with brain damage will struggle more with this and may act impulsively.

Games, memory training, and mindfulness exercises can enhance this precious thinking skill.
