Scalp Wounds
A scalp wound is an injury of the outermost layer of the head skin, a minor cut to a major cut extending to the skull or underlying muscle. These wounds could be induced by any of the following causes including falls, burns, automobile accidents, bites, or sharp objects. Mild abrasions may only need gentle cleaning with soap and water and proper wound care, while severe wounds may need to be treated medically by stapling or suturing. For cases of heavy bleeding or severe trauma, medical care must be obtained immediately. Infection prevention can be done with gentle washing with warm, soapy water and following this up with an antiseptic wash, and keeping the area elevated can further reduce risk. A mild, non-irritating moisturizer following washing is also needed to keep it moist and prevent scabbing. Tight headgear should also be avoided because it will irritate the wound and slow healing. In serious wounds, treatments may also include antibiotics, sutures, stapling, grafting, or plastic or reconstructive surgery to promote proper healing.
