Secondary Injury

A secondary injury occurs when additional damage develops after the original injury. This new disadvantage is not caused by initial trauma – such as a broken bone from a fall – but due to the complications that follow infections, poor blood flow, or organ problems. For example, if the injury site is not carried out properly, conditions such as bedsore, pneumonia, blood clots, infection, or nerve damage may arise. In severe cases, these secondary injuries can be worse than before and can also be a threat to life. This is why medical teams need to be vigilant: they should look around the site of injury, keep it clean, manage pain, and respond quickly to any warning signs. With proper care and monitoring, most secondary injuries can be prevented.
