Substance abuse
Substance abuse means the use of drugs, alcohol, or other dangerous substances that damage your health, mind or daily life. This involves consuming more than normal doses, taking them excessively, or taking them for reasons other than medical requirement. Some of the most abused substances are alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, painkillers, heroin, cocaine, and inhalants.
Individuals can begin to use substances due to curiosity, peer influence, stress, or as a means to escape issues. Gradually, this may progress to addiction, where the individual believes they are unable to quit using the substance despite the harm it is causing.
Drug abuse may result in severe health issues such as liver injury, cardiovascular complications, memory loss, panic attacks, and even mortality. It may have consequences for school, employment, relationships, and the law.
Treatment involves medication, support groups, lifestyle modification, and counselling. The sooner one seeks help, the higher his chances of recovery.
Family and society understanding and support play an important role to enable a person to overcome substance abuse and live a healthy life.
