Unprovoked Seizures

Unprovoked Seizures- also called primary generalized seizures -happen without any clear cause or trigger. They are common in adults and may occur as a one time episode or repeatedly. These seizures arise from abrupt, abnormal electrical activity in clustered neurons in the brain. They can live from a few seconds to several minutes and may include symptoms such as brief loss of consciousness, shocks or twitching movements, confusion and behavioral changes. While there is no single reason, factors such as brain lesions, head injuries, genetics, infections, use of substances, stress and lack of sleep can contribute. Treatment options include drugs to suppress seizure activity, selected cases include surgery, stimulation techniques like vagus nerve or transcranial magnetic stimulation and changes in lifestyle. With proper diagnosis and care, many people manage their seizures effectively and live a normal life.
